Robert Hogg Nisbet (1879-1961) was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1879. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence and the Art Students League in New York City with Henry Snell and Frank DuMond, and in Paris and Italy.

He spent his summers in Old Lyme in the early 1900’s and was a member of the art colony. He settled in South Kent, Connecticut in 1910. There he founded the Kent Art Association.

Nisbet was a member of the National Academy of Design (Associate 1920, Academician 1928), Art Students League of New York, Architectural League of New York, Allied Artists of America, and the American Watercolor Society. He was one of the incorporators of the Society of American Etchers. He was an Artist Life Member of the National Arts Club and the Lotos Club, and an Artist Member of the Salmagundi Club and Providence Art Club.

His work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Brooklyn Museum, Library of Congress, National Gallery Smithsonian Institute, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, Rhode Island School of Design, as well as many other public and private collections.

His awards include: Silver Medal, Pan-Pacific Exposition; Durham Prize, Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts; Hallgarten Prize, National Academy; Ranger Fund Purchase, National Academy; Bryan Prize, best American Print, 6th International Print Makers’ Exhibition; Prize and Medal, National Arts Club; Honorable Mention, Living American Etchers: Kate W. Arms Memorial Prize, Society of American Etchers; Potter Palmer Memorial Marine Prize, $1000, and National Academy: Swope Prize, Society of American Etchers.
